Indian expatriates in the UAE marked the 76th Republic Day of India with colorful celebrations on January 26, 2025. Thousands of members from the over four-million-strong Indian expat community attended flag-hoisting ceremonies at the Indian Consulate in Dubai and the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Despite the chilly weather, they gathered early in the morning to commemorate this significant day.
In Dubai, Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan hoisted the tricolor flag, while in Abu Dhabi, Indian Ambassador Sunjay Sudhi led the ceremony. Both diplomats read out excerpts from the Republic Day message of India's President, Droupadi Murmu. These events were complemented by cultural performances, including patriotic dances and music by Indian expat students, paying tribute to India's freedom fighters, soldiers, and farmers.
Attendees, such as Azimuddin Khan and his family, expressed their pride in participating, highlighting the importance of passing down a sense of patriotism to younger generations. Many expats, like Romesh Hirani, showcased their deep-rooted love for India by attending in traditional attire and carrying the national flag.
In addition to the celebrations, the Indian Ambassador in Abu Dhabi spoke about the exceptional bilateral relationship between India and the UAE. He praised the significant high-level exchanges in recent years, including the visits of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. These exchanges have strengthened ties, leading to the establishment of key Indian institutions in the UAE, such as IIT Delhi and the first overseas office of the CBSE in Dubai.
The Indian community’s contributions to the UAE’s socio-economic development were also highlighted, with the Ambassador acknowledging their vital role in shaping the country’s progress. He also expressed gratitude for the UAE’s generous support, making the expat community feel at home.
Looking ahead, the Consulate announced a new initiative aimed at improving cyber awareness and digital literacy among Indian workers in the UAE. This effort, in partnership with the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC), is designed to prevent workers from falling victim to cyber fraud and enhance their overall life skills.
As the celebrations concluded, the sense of unity and patriotism among the Indian expat community was palpable, reflecting their deep connection to both India and the UAE.
